SPORTS WEEK REPORT

2011 saw another "first" , the first annual Burlington Sports Week which ran from Sept 16 - 24. Your Burlington Sport Alliance and the Burlington Parks and Recreation Department combined forces to provide 9 days of sporting experiences for all clubs, organizations, and citizens to participate. 

 

Special Events included:

  • Jersey Day within schools and businesses
  • Free skate and swim sessions for all ages
  • Free 'try it 'sessions offered to the community to watch and try a variety of sports on Saturdays by Parks and Recreation
  • BSA member organizations offered free 'try it ' and 'learn about' sessions  during the week ( judo, lacrosse, gymnastics, synchronized swimming, soccer, Teen Tour band, Masters swimming, hockey, )
  • Guest speakers who spoke on Ethics in Sport and the True Sport model at a Time Out session; and the Inactivity Crisis in our society especially among our youth.
  • The unveiling of the most recent 3 inductees into the Sports Hall of Fame. 

 

Evaluations are being fed back by the participating sport organizations and the general consensus is TO REPEAT 'SPORTS WEEK IN BURLINGTON' FOR 2012

Friday Sept 16:  

 

Jersey Day


Time: All Day

Location: School and Business

Description: Students and adults proudly wear their sport jersey / jacket to school or work. If not an athlete yet, wear of your choice.


Saturday Sept 17:  

Sports Day in Canada

City Event


Time: 1:00 - 4:00 pm

Location: Appleby Arena, 1201 Appleby Line

Description:  Participating sport groups will be setting up information tables and interactive areas where you can try different activities.  Prizes to be won. Event 1:00-4:00, Free skating 2:00-4:00


Sunday Sept 18:_

 

Burlington Teen Tour Band 

Time: 1:30 - 4:00 pm

Location: Music Centre, Central Park, 2285 New St.

Description:  Open house for visitors to our regular practice session.

 

Burlington Braves Football 

Time: 4:00 - 8:00 pm

Location: Nelson Stadium, 4181 New St.

Description:  Come join us for Burlington Minor Football Day on September 18th.The Burlington Braves will be playing their 2nd home game of 4 at the new Nelson Turf field. The Braves will be hosting other BMFA groups such as the Stampeders, Flag and House League players ages 7-17 years old on this day.  Tailgate party starts at 4 pm. Game starts at 5 pm. Cost: $10 per person, $20 per family. 


Monday Sept 19:  

 

Time Out - Luncheon and Guest Speaker

Time: 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Location: Cedar Springs, 960 Cumberland Avenue

Description:  Come join us for lunch and a tour of Cedar Springs. Paul Melia, President and CEO Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport and the True Sport Foundation, will be talking.  Register with Linda Olimer:  olimerl@burlington.ca by Sept 14 

 

Educational Session: "Inactivity in Today's Youth"

Time: 7:00 - 8:30 pm

Location: 

Description:  Come listen to Christa Costas-Bradstreet of ParticipACTION talk on "The Physical Activity Crisis in Canada and how's its affecting the health of the nation."


Tuesday Sept 20:  

 

Burlington Youth Soccer Club

Time: 7:00 - 8:30 pm

Location: Sherwood Park, Field B, 5270 Fairview Street

Description:  Soccer Demonstration and Clinic


Wednesday Sept 21:

 

SportsXpress Golf Tournament

Time: 8:30 am - 1:00 pm

Location: Tyandaga Municipal Golf Course, 1265 Tyandaga Park Drive

Description:  SportsXpress will be hosting a golf tournament for 40 people. The cost of the event will be $50 per person. This inclusive package will include a 9-hole green fee, power cart & lunch. Please see registration form for more information or contact Tony Dawkins at tony@cdawkins.ca

Burlington Lawn Bowling Club

Time: 1:30 - 4:30 pm

Location: Burlington Lawn Bowling Club, 2275 New St.

Description:  The public can come to the greens and try lawn bowling. Members of the club will be available to give instruction. Participants must wear shoes with no heels

 

Burlington Gymnastics Club

Time: Various Times - see description

Description:  Times as follow: 4:30-5:00 BabyGYM program; 1:00 - 1:30 / 1:45 - 2:15/ 2:30-3:00/ 5:00-5:30 KinderGYM programs; 5:30-6:30 YouthGYM Programs; 5:30-6:30 Yoga; 6:30 Competitive Demonstrations

Burlington Lions Optimist Minor Hockey Association (BLOMHA)

Time: 6:00 - 7:00 pm

Location: Appleby Ice Centre, Pad 1, 1201 Appleby Line

Description:  Demonstration of hockey featuring two Rep Bulldogs teams. Information  will be available concerning  BLOMHA's House League and Rep programs.  Programs are available for players born 1993 to 2007. 

 

Burlington Masters Swim Club

Time: 8:00 - 9:00 pm

Location: Centennial Pool, 5151 New Street

Description:  An open invitation for individuals 18 years or order to come out and try the program. There is a $1 charge for insurance purposes. 


Thursday Sept 22:  

 

Burlington Eagles Rep Hockey

Time: 5:00 - 6:00 pm

Location: Appleby Ice Centre, Arena 3, 1201 Appleby Line

Description:  A game presentation of the 7 year old tyke teams. 

 

Burlington Minor Lacrosse

 

Time: 6:00 - 7:30 pm

Location: Wellington Park - Football Field, Central High School

Description:  Demonstration or show case of both girls and boys box and field lacrosse.

 


Friday Sept 23:  

 

Burlington BG's

Time: 6:30 - 8:30 pm

Location: Burlington Boys Gymnastics Club, 680 Maple AVE.

Description:  Did you know that gymnastics is one of the world's leading forms of lifelong exercise and discipline?  We have fun and challenging programs for all ages, from tots to seniors.  Come to Burlington BG's designated national training center and watch our world and national champions while they train or have fun trying out some of our equipment under the watchful eye of our coaches. Our adult trampoline class is sure to exhilerate you and your kids will be enthused about the skills and camaraderie that develops quickly in our hard working, fun-loving gym. Watch cheerleaders, tumblers, trampolinists and all-around gymnasts at work and play.  Wear comfortable clothes and join in the fun as we celebrate Burlington Sports Weeks on Friday, September 23 at Burlington BG's, 680 Maple Ave.between 6:30 and 8:30 pm.  Better yet, call us to register for one of our fall programs and receive a 10% discount of the registration fee.

2011 Sports Hall of Fame Inductee Unveiling

 

Time: 11:00 AM

Location: Burlington Tourism Centre, 414 Locust St.

Description:  Three new members of the Sports Hall of Fame, inducted at the 2011 Recognition and Awards Dinner  will be unveiled today at 11:00 AM:  Jackie Rosart - athlete;  Harry Clark -  Sport Builder; and Don McFarlane -   athlete. Location  414  Locust St . Come and meet these three as well as other inductees. 

 

Try Synchronized swimming

Time: 1:00 - 4:00 pm

Description:  Burlington Synchronized Swimming Club - Developing Champions For Life
